Nematic Phases: have no positional order at all, but have same directions along the director
Anisotropic LCS (with large alignment)
Chiral nematic: Rotates plane-polarized light (cholesteric =chiral nematic LC)
Smectic: has more positional ordering than Nematic
Here mesogens move within same plane but not between planes.
Here three Smectics:
Smectic A: Director is perpendicular to plane
Where mesogens move in same plane
Smectic B: Director is perpendicular to plane, and mesogens form hexagons in the layer
Smectic C: Like in Smectic A but have an angle not equal to 90 (titled orientation)
